Microsoft Acquires Open Source Company Deis to Boost Kubernetes Expertise April 2017

Microsoft signed an agreement Monday to acquire open source software developer Deis to help make Microsoft’s container portfolio easier for customers and developers to work with. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

According to a blog post by Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President, Cloud and Enterprise Group, Microsoft, “Deis gives developers the means to vastly improve application agility, efficiency and reliability through their Kubernetes container management technologies.”

With offices in San Francisco and Boulder, CO, Deis has created Helm, Workflow and Steward to help developers and operators build, deploy, manage and scale applications on top of Kubernetes, according to its website.

The acquisition comes a few months after Microsoft Azure announced that Kubernetes is generally available in the Azure Container Service (ACS).

Guthrie says that members of the Deis team are strong supporters of the open source community, and Deis CTO Gabriel Monroy said that the “future of open source infrastructure at Microsoft is very bright.”

“Microsoft has a storied history of building tools and technologies that work for developers. Paired with their cloud leadership and unambiguous support for open source software, we are impressed by the breadth, depth and reach of Microsoft to help define, shape and build new cloud-native applications. We look forward to making Azure the best place to run containerized workloads,” Monroy said in a blog post.

According to TechCrunch, Engine Yard previously owned Deis after acquiring the company in 2015.
