Which U.S. technology sectors are hiring? According to CompTIA, the IT services space experienced the largest increase in tech jobs last year. The tech industry association also noted that the total number of tech jobs nationwide rose in 2014.

CompTIA’s new Cyberstates 2015: The Definitive State-by-State Analysis of the U.S. Tech Industry” report of tech employment, wages and other key economic factors showed that U.S. tech employment totaled 6.5 million last year, up from 6.4 million in 2013. Additionally, CompTIA found that the tech industry comprised 5.7 percent of the U.S. private sector workforce in 2014, which was unchanged from 2013.

Other CompTIA findings included:

  • IT services sector employment grew by 63,300 to 2.1 million last year. CompTIA researchers attributed much of this growth to the rising demand for custom computer programming services and computer systems design services.

  • U.S. tech industry workers earned an average annual wage of $100,400 last year, down from $101,800 in 2013. However, the average annual tech wage was more than double the average annual private sector wage of $49,600 in 2014 (102 percent more).

  • U.S. tech payroll totaled $654 billion last year, up by $4 billion or 0.6 percent from 2013, adjusted for inflation. The IT services sector had the largest payroll of all the tech sectors, with $210 billion in 2014.

  • California led all states with 1,087,800 tech industry workers in 2014, nearly twice as many as second-ranked Texas (581,200 workers) and more than three times as many as third-ranked New York (346,500 workers). Florida ranked fourth with 307,100 workers, followed by Massachusetts with 286,300 workers.

  • California offered the highest average annual wage for tech industry workers at $139,500 in 2014. Massachusetts ranked second with an average annual wage of $121,000 last year, followed by Washington State at $119,300, New Jersey at $111,600 and the District of Columbia at $105,600.

IT technical positions also remain in high demand in the United States, according to CompTIA. The tech industry association’s “IT Industry Outlook 2015” report revealed that roughly 68 percent of the 650 executives surveyed said they expect to face a challenging or very challenging hiring environment this year as they struggle to employ qualified technical staff members.
