Microsoft Office 365, Dynamics CRM Online Suffer Cloud Outage

cloud-failure-150x112

The Microsoft Office 365 cloud suite and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online have been hit with a widespread cloud outage. While exact effects vary, customers have been left with Office 365 performance problems, an inability to send or receive e-mail, and the loss of user management and provisioning. For channel partners, the Office 365 outage may trigger new concerns about loss of system control. Updated at 3:22 PM PDT with a comment from Microsoft.

Microsoft Online Services has acknowledged the problem on its Twitter account, but no answers or even estimate recovery times are forthcoming. One user told All About Microsoft’s Mary Jo Foley that his Office 365 status dashboard has been changed to “Investigating,” and the text reads:

”All users are unable to access their email, and administrators are unable to manage existing accounts or provision new accounts.”

Meanwhile, the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online outage seems to be mainly reported by upset users, who say that performance is currently so bad that CRM is practically unusable.

As Foley notes, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online is hosted separately from Microsoft Office 365 and its predecessor, Microsoft BPOS. All are hosted in Microsoft data centers, and none are on the Microsoft Windows Azure platform. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online is slated for inclusion in the Office 365 suite later this year.

Ironically, some Microsoft cloud partners and customers have been chomping at the bit to migrate from BPOS to Office 365 — mainly because Office 365 was said to be more reliable than BPOS.

Still, Microsoft has been telling partners and customers to carefully plan migrations to Office 365, and to avoid manual migrations to the new cloud suite.

Keep watching TalkinCloud for updates on this cloud outage.

Update 1: Microsoft has gotten in touch with the following comment from Steven Gerri, General Manager, Global Foundation Services:

“At approximately 11:30am PDT, Microsoft became aware of a networking issue affecting customers of some Microsoft services hosted out of one of our North American data centers. We worked to isolate the issue and we are beginning to see service restoration. We continue to investigate the root cause of this issue.”

In other words, it’s apparently not a product issue with Office 365 itself. Stay tuned for more.

Update 2 at 5:27 p.m. PDT: A Microsoft spokesperson says the service has been restored.
