Hurricane Sandy Aftermath: Backup & Disaster Recovery Update
Amid Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath, more than 3 million people remain without power across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as of Nov. 1. But the disaster recovery effort is in full swing — with companies like Datto, eFolder and StorageCraft (among others) offering special support and outreach to MSPs and VARs that have customers in the recovery zone. Here’s the update.
Among the tidbits we’re tracking:
1. Datto has launched a special web page (www.dattobackup.com/sandy) to help VARs and MSPs understand key support steps the company has taken. Datto is offering priority support to all partners affected by the storm. The company is “70x our monthly average of disaster scenarios in our off-site cloud.” To cope, Datto has fully staffed its technical support and cloud operations center 24×7 since 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 28.
2. eFolder, as the storm approached, said it had “enough virtualization capacity to virtualize every server that is currently being protected by our partners in Hurricane Sandy’s path. Partners have access to the eFolder virtualization service 24x7x365, but only pay for eFolder Continuity Cloud capacity when and if they need it.
3. StorageCraft from now through Nov. 14, 2012, is offering free three-day versions of StorageCraft ShadowProtect IT Edition. MSPs and VARs can download the software to backup and recover an unlimited number of Windows servers, desktops and laptops. Get details here: www.storagecraft.com/sandy.
Overall, Hurricane Sandy is the latest wake up call to VARs and MSPs that protect on-premises data but fail to back it up to an off-premises cloud. Moreover, the concept of recovering customer data and customer networks within virtualized clouds will likely go mainstream as customers and partners increasingly realize on.
