Google Postini: We're Committed to Security Channel Partners

As Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) gets set to retire the Postini brand (while embedding email security capabilities directly into Google Apps) rivals are moving in to recruit Postini channel partners and customers. But Google is saying “not so fast.” The search giant sees ongoing opportunity ahead, especially since many existing Postini resellers already are Google Apps resellers.

According to a Google spokesman:

“We have a worldwide channel sales organization, dedicated to making our resellers successful. We’ll be providing existing Postini partners with training resources and other support to ensure they can continue working closely with Google.

It’s worth noting that most of our existing Postini resellers are actually already Apps resellers. By helping their customers make this transition, the reseller partners will be able to maintain their current revenue and margins — and in the future will be able to help their customers deploy the full Apps suite (e.g. Gmail, Docs, etc). There are both license revenue and value added service opportunities available to reseller partners as a result.”

It’s hard to debate Google’s logic. Many of the world’s top 100 cloud services providers (CSPs) already offer Google Apps and/or Postini consulting migration and deployment services. As Postini capabilities gradually surface directly in Google Apps, it’s safe to expect those Google partners to march forward with the search giant.

Still, as Talkin’ Cloud pointed out yesterday, Google’s decision to fold Postini into Google Apps creates an inflection point for channel partners and customers. Some of those companies, no doubt, will explore alternative services. And Postini rivals are lining up to help sway the conversation.
