Comcast Business Expands Cable Gigabit Internet Service to Boston, New Jersey, Others

Businesses in several more states now have access to Comcast Business’ DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet service.

Comcast said on Tuesday that the service, which can help businesses reach 1 gigabit speeds, is now available around Boston; Philadelphia; New Jersey; northern Delaware; Baltimore; Charlottesville, Virginia; and Washington, D.C.

Comcast says the service offers businesses the Internet connectivity they need to move to cloud-based operations. Kevin O’Toole, Comcast Business’ senior vice president of product management, says his company is building the “largest gig-speed network” in the U.S.

“We have been at the forefront of DOCSIS 3.1 deployment and today’s rollout further demonstrates our commitment to bringing this transformational technology to all businesses in our footprint,” O’Toole said. “Our gig-speed network allows businesses to quickly and easily scale network capacity at their locations to suit their individual needs and to support new technology applications on-site or in the cloud.”

The service comes in two speed tiers: Business Internet 1 Gig and Business Internet 500 (MB). DOCSIS 3.1 can work on top of already existing Comcast services, such as Comcast Business Ethernet.

The service previously only was offered in Detroit; Huntsville, Alabama; Atlanta; Nashville; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Miami. We wrote about those cities getting the service in January. Comcast installed the first DOCIS 3.1 modem in Philadelphia last year. The company says it will expand “on a rolling basis” this fall and attempt to cover all of its main service areas by the end of 2018.
