Amazon Web Services Launches South America Cloud Region

Amazon Web Services, the cloud arm of e-retail giant Amazon.com, is spreading its reach to Brazil with the opening of a new South America (Sao Paolo) Region — Amazon’s eighth worldwide.

The official press release is mostly filled with a description of Amazon Web Services and its scalable IaaS/PaaS/storage/whatever cloud platform, but I have a hunch most of TalkinCloud’s readers are already familiar with the bulk of the AWS value proposition.

The really interesting bit from that release is buried, as Mauricio Fernandes, the CEO of local AWS reseller and solution provider Dedalus Prime (site in Portuguese), explained why his company is so excited about the new Region:

“We believe that the resource elasticity offered by AWS provides the most efficient infrastructure to customers. This, combined with the pay-as-you-go model, will dramatically change the way we think about enterprise IT infrastructure.”

In other words, Dedalus Prime sees market opportunity in Brazil, and by opening a local data center, South American organizations under strict regulatory compliance rules can take advantage of the benefits of the cloud. It’s nothing new or groundbreaking, but it’s noteworthy because TalkinCloud generally doesn’t think of Brazil as a hotbed of cloud adoption.

But judging from Dedalus Prime’s site, which shares customer success stories around its AWS practice as well as its Google Apps and RunMyProcess service offerings, it might be time to change that.
