A little more Google Apps developer buzz coming out of this week’s Google I/O conference here in San Francisco: CloudLock, which bills itself as the only provider of data security for organizations using the Google Apps cloud suite, has launched CloudLock Vault. Available within the larger CloudLock for Google Apps solution, CloudLock Vault lets organizations manage data retention policies for documents and files stored in the cloud.

The pitch, according to the press release, is simple: CloudLock Vault creates a storage unit within Google Docs where files can’t be deleted or modified. Files are put in according to policy set by the administrator, helping organizations meet regulatory compliance – especially important in organizations where standards such as HIPAA must be met.

All deposits in the vault are logged and tagged, and users can search the vault using the native Google search bar. Administrators can make certain files only viewable by their owners, and it can be set to automatically sweep for files that belong in the storehouse. And the company says it’s all handled within Google Docs, so no third party holds onto the data.

CloudLock is betting heavily on the success of its cloud security solutions, abandoning its former life as an on-premise data security specialty to chase it. In return, it’s able to focus on developing solutions such as CloudLock Vault. But will the marketplace bite?
