Cloud backup services provider Carbonite (CARB) has announced plans to acquire MailStore, a Viersen, Germany-based email archiving solutions provider for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Carbonite CEO Mohamad Ali said his company will integrate MailStore’s full-text search and indexing capabilities to help its managed service provider (MSP) partners better manage, understand and leverage customer data.

“MailStore’s fast-search technology and easy-to-use interface allow users to search and find important information without the need for IT assistance. We look forward to bringing this technology to more businesses so they are able to derive value from archived information,” he said in a prepared statement.

The acquisition could provide a “huge opportunity” to both Carbonite and MailStore’s channel partners as well.

“Both Carbonite and MailStore channel partners will be able to offer more robust and comprehensive data protection solutions to their clients without having to deal with additional vendors,” a Carbonite spokesperson told MSPmentor.

MailStore CEO Tim Berger said he will continue to lead MailStore’s operations after the acquisition is complete.

He also pointed out that Carbonite will be focused on expanding its suite of continuity solutions for businesses, including backup and recovery, and MailStore will continue to focus on email archiving.

“We’ll work with the Carbonite leadership team on developing an integration plan that helps both of [us] continue to innovate, lead our space and provide the best possible products to our users and channel partners,” Berger wrote in a blog post.

More than 22,000 companies worldwide currently use MailStore’s flagship solution, MailStore Server, which creates copies of all emails in a central email archive.

Carbonite said it expects to finalize the MailStore acquisition by the end of the year.
