VMware (NYSE: VMW) has bought Virsto Software, a software developer specializing in storage optimization in virtual environments, a move VMware said will advance its development of storage technologies and fits with its software-defined data center strategy.

Neither company disclosed terms of the agreement, which is expected to close sometime in the first quarter of this year.

Virsto’s technology addresses the growing complexity and cost of storage within virtual and cloud environments, particularly for virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI), large software development and test centers, and to support business-critical applications. For example, Virsto’s technology has shown to reduce the cost of storage per desktop by as much as 70 percent when deployed within a VDI, according to the company.

Mark Davis, Virsto chief executive, said the deal offers the developer an upgraded path to market and will spark sales growth in the enterprise and cloud storage segment.

“VMware (and others) were brilliant when they changed the meaning of the word ‘server’ from referring to hardware to instead being a software abstraction,” Davis wrote in a blog post. “The spark of our inspiration was that someone–and hey, it might as well be us!–had to do the same for storage. A simple, idealistic idea that everyone in the storage industry knew was crazy. Just as the original idea of VMware was just academic pie in the sky when they started. Cute idea, but it’ll never catch on, all the experts said. Well, turned out the experts were wrong.”

John Gilmartin, VMware Storage and Availability vice president, said the vendor will continue to sell Virsto’s appliance as a standalone product and also will integrate the technology into future VMware offerings.

“We have two plans for the Virsto product,” Gilmartin wrote in a blog post. “First, we’ll continue to offer Virsto’s standalone virtual appliance to help accelerate storage performance and improve efficiency in VMware vSphere environments. This means we’ll continue to support existing Virsto customers while also introducing Virsto’s capabilities to new users. Second, we’re planning to integrate Virsto’s architecture and data management services into future VMware products.”
