SAP‘s cloud computing and cloud services strategy for small and midsize business (SMB) partners appears set to get a boost. Indeed, SAP has hired Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) small business channel expert Meaghan Kelly; she’ll join SAP on June 18 as VP of global channel marketing, Kelly confirmed in a quick conversation with The VAR Guy.

Kelly joins a growing list of HP executives who are leaving the company or recently departed HP.

Check Kelly’s resume and you’ll find extensive experience building cloud services and mobile computing relationships in the IT channel. For instance, she drove an HP-Axcient partnership that helped Hewlett-Packard VARs to generate recurring revenues from cloud storage. In some ways, the HP-Axcient relationship also helped HP’s VARs to push into a managed services mindset.

In a brief chat with The VAR Guy, Kelly confirmed her career move, spoke highly of her time at HP, and described the SAP opportunity as a “great one” that she couldn’t pass up.

Just a guess from The VAR Guy: It’s a safe bet SAP will leverage Kelly’s experience in cloud computing, mobile computing and small business channel engagements. This FastChat Video, from March 2011, includes some of Kelly’s views on the SMB market:

Meanwhile, Kelly’s departure comes amid larger changes at HP. The company is cutting 27,000 employees and trying to energize revenue growth within Autonomy, the software business HP acquired for more than $10 billion last year. Also, Frank Rauch, vice president of U.S. channels in HP’s Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking division, is leaving for a position at VMware, CRN reported today.
