Jamf is expanding its enterprise iOS and Mac management capabilities with its agreement to acquire Wandera for $400 million. The deal coincided with the release of Jamf’s first-quarter earnings.

Similar to Jamf, Wandera protects Macs, iPads and iPhones in commercial and enterprise environments. Jamf, which went public last summer, is a major provider of mobile device management software for Macs and iOS devices. Closely held Wandera, founded in 2012, offers zero-trust security that compliments Jamf’s device management offerings, Jamf CEO Dean Hager said.

“Wandera strengthens Jamf’s overall position in Apple enterprise management and offers a number of expansion opportunities,” Hager said during the company’s earnings call.

The Wandera portfolio consists of three products – Threat Defense, Data Policy and Private Access – that protect Apple devices.

During the earnings call, Hager offered four reasons why Jamf opted to acquire Wandera.

Keep up with the latest channel-impacting mergers and acquisitions in our M&A roundup.

One, there is little overlap between Jamf Protect and Jamf Connect solutions. The Wandera portfolio will make Jamf more competitive in IoS, which is the largest segment in the company’s total addressable market (TAM).

“Even more exciting,” Hager said, “Wandera’s solutions will grow Jamf’s TAM by $5 billion across all global commercial markets. And that market expansion doesn’t include non-Apple devices, which the Wandera solution also supports and will continue to be a valuable part of the Jamf product portfolio.”

Education Vertical

Second is the opportunity to expand its offerings in one of its largest segments — education. Wandera’s solutions add $1 billion to Jamf’s TAM in the education sector, according to Hager.

“The very technology that was required for distance learning can now transform classrooms and provide students centered personal learning plans that are engaging and equitable,” Hager said. “But as exciting as this is, technology also presents a potential danger to students and greater concern for parents. Wandera’s solution offers a valuable follow-on that can be used to secure school resources, protect student privacy and restrict student access to inappropriate threatening or prohibited content.”

The third opportunity will help expand both companies’ go-to-market channels. London-based Wandera has a strong presence in EMEA. Hager said Wandera will help Jamf expand internationally.  Additionally, mobile carriers are a key channel for Wandera.

“More than half of Wandera’s historical sales have come through carriers, while less than 1% of Jamf sales have come through that channel,” Hager said. “With Wandera, we believe Jamf can now offer carriers a better full product solution.”

Fourth, most of Wandera’s employees work on product development. Historically, the company has invested little in go-to-market channels.

“Jamf’s go-to-market direct and indirect channels have proven extremely efficient and effective,” Hager said. “We believe with the additional scale of Jamf’s sales and marketing teams, we can help many more organizations globally experience success with the Wandera solution.”

Look for the deal to close next quarter, pending customary approvals.
