When the MLB needed a power protection solution to safeguard critical equipment at its Jackie Robinson Training Complex last year, the organization chose to send Eaton to the plate.

Located in Vero Beach, Fla., the 80-acre campus is a year-round hub for amateur development events, hosting athletes of all ages for tournaments and multisport training. In addition to numerous fields and a 6,500-seat stadium, the training complex features an array of computing equipment that requires uninterrupted clean power, from servers to security cameras to unique applications that track pitch speed.

While working with the MLB to identify the ideal Eaton solution to back up the training complex, our PowerAdvantage partner was thrown a major curve ball: Although the center’s equipment required a huge power draw, the facility had extremely limited IT space — making it impossible to install a traditional three-phase UPS.

Squeeze Play to the Rescue

While many vendors would have struck out at the challenge, our partner was able to provide a winning solution with the Eaton BladeUPS. Because the space-saving, modular three-phase UPS is capable of delivering up to 60 kW (N+1) in a single rack, MLB was able to deploy a pair of 12kW units in each of the stadium’s three IT rooms. Thanks to the BladeUPS’s ability to deliver industry-leading power in the smallest footprint, the MLB acquired the ideal player for its high-density environment.

But the BladeUPS proved to be just one MVP player among a winning team: The training complex project also included two 6 kVA Eaton 9PX UPSs; 14 Eaton 5P UPSs with Gigabit Network Cards featuring built-in cybersecurity; power management software; and 20 managed rack power distribution units with attached network cards that enable remote management.

Using Eaton power management software, MLB representatives can log into the stadium and obtain real-time status updates, as well as receive notifications about any power event, which officials report has been a huge benefit. In fact, MLB has been so impressed by the entire Eaton product line and support team that it now has multiple projects in progress throughout its major and minor league stadiums.
