Google Chrome Speeds Up to v10

The Google Chrome web browser has hit a major milestone with the general availability version 10, bringing a slew of improvements — most notably, a 66% boost in JavaScript performance. Google’s marketing it as a “back to basics” upgrade that improves the existing experience rather than add any new earth-shaking features. But it could still be good news for Google partners, especially those looking forward to the Chrome OS cloud.

Here’s a list of the new improvements brought by the new version of Google Chrome v10, as per the company’s official blog entry:

  • A new search box in the settings pane makes it easier for users to find the toggle they’re looking for – and every settings page has a sharable URL, making it easier to point endusers exactly where you need them to go.

  • Google Chrome has long supported syncing bookmarks between computers, but they’ve now extended the feature to passwords. It’s protected by one’s Google account password, but it’s not hard to see how enterprise administrators might not be so hot on the concept.

  • One of the big concepts behind Google Chrome has been its sandboxed tabs, meaning a single crashed page doesn’t bring the entire browser down. Well, they’ve now extended that concept to the ubiquitous, if notoriously unreliable, Adobe Flash player. And it protects against malware being installed by a malicious Flash runtime, to boot.

All of these things point at one thing: a more consistent, speedy, and stable Google Chrome. The browser is already available for enterprise deployment, and I have a hunch there are plenty of Google Apps Authorized Resellers who also promote Chrome to their customers. So not only will this make web apps like Google Docs run better — it’s a solid reinforcement to the underpinnings for the impending Chrome OS launch.
