Gluster, Savage IO Team Up to Add GlusterFS to NAS Servers

You may remember Gluster back when it announced support for KVM and Xen through its Gluster Virtual Storage Appliance with GlusterFS. Gluster also made some noise by supporting Apache Hadoop. Now, partnering with Savage IO, Gluster takes on the network storage space by applying the GlusterFS to Savage IO’s NAS Servers.

Savage IO hardware outfitted with GlusterFS is seen as a big win for Savage IO — according to the companies, GlusterFS aligns with Savage IO’s commitment to delivering powerful appliances with cost-effective prices that foster vendor neutrality, thanks to Gluster’s long compatibility list and Savage IO’s interoperable NAS hardware infrastructure. GlusterFS and Savage IO believe the relationship to be symbiotic, with many customers finding Savage IO’s hardware with Gluster’s scalable file system capabilities most useful in large verticals, especially health care and financial markets.

How does this news relate to storage as a whole? Clearly, storage needs are on the rise (aren’t they always?) but a focus on interoperable hardware and vendor neutrality may suggest that  customers are frequently looking to piece together best-of-breed solutions when building cloud or private storage networks. Offering a solution that allows for heterogeneous data centers is definitely something virtualization and storage VARs should keep their eye on as the industry zips forward.
