EnterpriseDB Expands Cloud Database to Amazon Virtual Private Cloud

Public cloud, private cloud: Increasingly, these terms are losing their meaning, as enterprise cloud-computing solutions blend the best features of both approaches into one. That strategy is evident in the latest product from EnterpriseDB, an open source database provider that has now expanded its Postgres Plus Cloud Database to include support for Amazon (AMZN) Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).

EnterpriseDB is pitching the new functionality as a solution that offers enterprises several advantages over competing cloud databases:

That last feature is especially critical as a way of combining the convenience and scalability of the public cloud with the control of private cloud platforms. And it's a strength EnterpriseDB is promoting heavily, stating: "Expanding Postgres Plus Cloud Database to support VPCs gives end users even greater flexibility and control over their database. With virtual private clouds, end users can manage inbound and outbound traffic at the instance and at the subnet level. This complements additional control that Postgres Plus Cloud Database enables by deploying each database as a completely private instance. With root access providing full control of the database, users can monitor more operational information, tune more characteristics of the database for higher performance, and better customize their database deployment for specific needs than other Postgres databases in the cloud."

The product announcement follows a year of rapid expansion for EnterpriseDB, which reports seeing "spectacular growth" in its customer base during 2013, as well as a 200 percent increase in revenue. And it was accompanied by the recent extension of the company's operations into the Australia market, with EnterpriseDB now offering its Postgres Plus Cloud Database to Amazon Web Services users (not just those of the VPC platform) in the Asia Pacific region.
