Microsoft’s GitHub Layoffs Hitting Hundreds of Workers, All Offices Closing

Microsoft-owned GitHub is initiating layoffs impacting 10% of its workforce and is also going fully remote.

TechCrunch reported the layoffs and said GitHub had about 3,000 employees, meaning the layoffs are impacting about 300 workers. The company is also closing all of its offices as their leases end. The layoffs started immediately and will continue through the next several months.

GitHub is a software development platform. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion.

“We announced a number of difficult but necessary decisions and budgetary realignments to both protect the health of our business in the short term and grant us the capacity to invest in our long-term strategy moving forward,” a GitHub spokesperson told the publication.

GitHub Among Many Tech Companies Pursuing Layoffs

GitHub joins the more than 20 companies doing business in the channel that have cut workers since the start of the year. This week alone, Dell Technologies, Secureworks and Zoom have announced layoffs, in all impacting thousands of workers.

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke wrote an email to the company’s staff that was obtained by TechCrunch.

“Although our entire leadership team has carefully deliberated this step and come to agreement, ultimately, as CEO the decision is mine,” he said. “I recognize this will be difficult on you all, and we will approach this period with the utmost respect for every Hubber,”

Last month, Microsoft announced job cuts impacting 10,000 employees. That’s a little less than 5% of its workforce. The move is in response to macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the job cuts in a blog. The layoffs are taking place this quarter.

Microsoft is aligning its cost structure with its revenue and where it sees customer demand, Nadella said.
