Ingram Micro Lays Off 180 Employees

Sad news for many Ingram Micro (IM) North America employees who will soon be out of a job, thanks to a previously announced corporate reorganization.

Ingram Micro’s latest restructuring may be good for the overall health of the company, but it won’t be so great for 180 of its North American employees who will be let go, according to a report from CRN. Ingram Micro has not announced whether it will lay off any additional employees throughout the organization.

The previously announced restructuring is expected to cost somewhere between $80 million to $100 million over the course of this year, which will be offset by the company’s recent layoffs.

In the past week, the company also cut 40 employees from its offices in Amherst, N.Y., according to a story in the Buffalo News, and a report from a CBS affiliate noted several dozen employees were let go at its Williamsville, N.Y., location earlier this week. But even though the news seems grim for Ingram Micro’s employees, the news is not without a silver lining; while 40 jobs were cut in Amherst, the company has plans to hire an additional 90 employees for that location, which may include some of employees who were laid off.

“Ingram Micro North America is realigning its business to capitalize on its investments and success,” said Paul D. Bay, president of Ingram Micro, in the Buffalo News article. “These moves will enhance our ability to innovate and respond to market needs, ultimately enabling us to work better, serve better and earn better for our partners, associates and stakeholders.”

Ingram went public with its plans to cut costs late last year, when it announced that it would be closing its North America Specialty Solutions Division. The company noted it would begin its global restructuring as part of its 2014 Global Organizational Effectiveness Initiative. This week marked the first concrete details of what those plans would mean for the company’s 21,800 global associates.

In related layoff news, IBM also laid off a score of employees this week in the midst of its own $1 billion layoff program.
