Pegasus Technologies overcame the challenges posed by COVID-19 and has succeeded amid the transition to remote work. The company ranks on this year’s brand-new “Hot 101,” which recognizes companies that are evolving and growing their MSP practices.

The up-and-coming MSP is the IT department for many businesses and nonprofit organizations in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. The company, which recently added SNAP Defense to its security product stack, provides alerts on privileged user activity. An infected asset is detained before the hacker is able to complete his/her mission.

As CEO Matthew Tucker points out, his company made necessary adjustments and advancements to effectively serve clients during the pandemic.

In a Q&A with Channel Futures, Tucker talks about his MSP‘s efforts during the pandemic. He also talks about why he wanted to own a business, rather than working for someone else.

Channel Futures: What new opportunities and challenges came with the global COVID-19 pandemic?

Matthew Tucker: The biggest challenge we faced was overcoming the hurdles that make working from home strenuous in terms of management. The inability to physically see and communicate with supervising managers leaves the employees feeling a disconnect between themselves and their superiors. On the flip side, managers wonder if the employees are giving enough effort to complete their tasks. With some creativity, dedication and perseverance, Pegasus has made a success of the world of remote work. We implemented Microsoft Teams companywide. Now we can easily communicate via chat, video conference, as well as seamlessly collaborate on documents.

Managers routinely have video calls with their teams to discuss performances and any concerns before a negative impact arises as a result of miscommunication and lack of care. With our management and staff working together to overcome the challenges with working remotely, the future looks extremely promising in terms of flexibility and the continuation of a blended work environment in the post-pandemic world, encouraging a whole new level of services.

CF: What was the single biggest technology or business decision that drove your company’s growth in 2019? How did it do so?

MT: In 2019, the area we grew the most was in the adoption of Microsoft Teams and the Azure Cloud both for our internal use and our clients. Microsoft’s cloud services have allowed us to match a variety of technologies and customize solutions individually for each client’s needs. With this level of flexibility, we were finally able to sit down with our clients and design a cloud solution that would truly allow many of them to go serverless. Not having a physical server on the premises has been a dream for most of our clients; however, until now, this was never truly attainable.

Now that the Microsoft Azure stack has matured, we have the answer many were looking for.

CF: Why are you a business owner instead of working for someone else? What is the allure of entrepreneurship to you?

MT: At age 10 it was clear to me that my path was to work for myself and not others. My first business was hunting for stray golf balls in fields, streams and ponds next to the local golf course. I would take my findings and present them in egg cartons to all the arriving golfers at my roadside stand, charging 25 cents for most and 50 cents for the only-hit-once balls. It was during these years that I realized I could be in complete control of my destiny and financial growth.

As I matured to the age of 17, I started my second business of importing and breeding snakes as well as other reptiles. It was at this point that I realized my passion was to lead and inspire people. I cannot think of any better way to accomplish this other than owning your own business. Through my 20s, I continued my growth in learning to manage, to sell and lead. In my early 30s, Pegasus Technologies was born. This is where I was able to put all my business lessons to work and make my dreams a reality.

Being able to provide a professional opportunity and future for the staff, and working with them every day, is the greatest honor. This, and having complete control of the service delivered and customers’ experiences as I would like it if I were a client makes the struggles and challenges all worth it.
