For VARs working the virtualization space, the list of solutions grows ever longer. The latest comes from a partnership between Quest Software and MokaFive to deliver a local VDI solution. The idea of repurposing older machines for VDI duty isn’t new, but their angle is. Quest and MokaFive are calling this a BYOC (bring your own computer) solution, including Macs, iPads and even Android devices. The two companies also have an interesting plan to increase adoption while beating out rivals. Read on for the details …

For the uninitiated, MokaFive’s claim to fame is bringing Mac-friendliness to the enterprise (and MSPs) with its virtual desktop solution that fully supports Apple computers in the traditional Windows workplace. Pair that with the VDI-Active Dictory prowess Quest provides, and you have the Quest vWorkspace -MokaFive suite.

The Quest vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite is available now as a local VDI solution that also manages, secures and delivers the virtual desktop to pretty much any device available, and yes, that includes the aforementioned Macs, as long as they’re running OS X Leopard. Linux, iPad, Android (Java) and even traditional thin clients are all supported by this solution. Even “zero PCs,” which Quest labels as 1GHz/512MB RAM machines, can be utilized. The companies claim there are no hardware compatibility lists or restrictions on graphic subsets with the solution.

The motivation behind this far-reaching support (and blend of local and remote VDI) is to save companies money in deploying virtualization solutions. Quest also offers a VDI assessment product to help customers determine what style of virtualization technology suits them. Such a tool that could prove helpful for VARs looking to be that trusted adviser.

And what of that plan to oust rivals? Right now, Quest is directly attacking VMware by offering free vWorkspace licenses for every VMware license customers trade in. Users currently can trade in up to 250 VMware View licenses for vWorkspace Enterprise licenses at no charge, and that trade-in includes support and maintenance for the first year. Additional vWorkspace licenses can be had for 25 percent off list price. Take note: This deal is good only through 2011.

Quest Software and MokaFive are looking to build out a longer relationship and have laid down a preliminary roadmap for increased integration between the technologies for local, hosted and remote VDI sessions. Right now, Quest vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite can be evaluated free and is available through distributors, system integrators and its channel partners.
