Former VMware (VMW) CTO Steve Herrod, now a venture capitalist at General Catalyst Partners, is preparing to make his next investment move. It sounds like the target is the security industry. The VAR Guy wonders: Will it have anything to do with the software-defined data center (SDDC)? Hmmm…

Herrod recently invested in Datto, a cloud backup and disaster recovery (BDR) specialist. And on Sept. 12, Herrod gave his first keynote since leaving VMware — delivering some SDDC thoughts at Datto Partner Conference in Washington, D.C.

Herrod said compute, network/security and storage capabilities each are being virtualized and converged in the data center. The grades so far: Compute has earned an A in its journey, storage is at a B or so, and network/security is likely at a C or so.

During a brief lunch meeting, The VAR Guy asked Herrod if he was planning to make more investments near-term. Herrod hinted that The VAR Guy should watch the security market.

Hmmm… Our resident blogger will be sure to do so.
