Commvault on Tuesday unveiled two cloud-ready data infrastructure offerings designed to provide customers with on-premises “simplicity, elasticity, resiliency, flexibility and scale” for managing and protecting secondary data.

Commvault HyperScale Software and Commvault HyperScale Appliance allow enterprises to replace legacy backup tools with cloud-enabled data management. The two are available as an all-in-one software and appliance bundle or as a reference architecture design with the software.

Ralph Nimergood, Commvault’s vice president of worldwide channels and alliances, tells Channel Partners there are new opportunities for partners to expand their portfolios to address the “extremely fast growing market for scale-out data management solutions.”

“This includes the flexibility to recommend a compute/storage platform to meet their customer’s choice, and streamline installation and professional services based on hardened reference architectures, installation and best-practice guides, or with the Commvault HyperScale Appliance,” he said. “Additionally, Commvault HyperScale solutions address the needs midsize and enterprise customers have to provide an ‘on premises, scale-out’ solution with cloud-like economics for those applications that either can’t move easily to the cloud or the business requires them to maintain in a local storage pool.”

The HyperScale technology is available directly through Commvault or through its global partner community. They are configured to make it easy for partners to quote, sell, support and implement, the company said.

The launch addresses the ongoing shift enterprises are making toward secondary storage as a means to drive key business and IT transformation initiatives, according to Commvault. About 70 percent of customer data is consumed as a secondary copy, and therefore these solutions are able to meet the increasing demands of the secondary storage market by delivering customers a data protection and management platform that delivers cloud-like services on premises, it said.

Commvault HyperScale Appliance integrates compute, storage, networking, virtualization, backup and recovery, full life-cycle data management and analytics into a single platform across the data center and in the cloud. Because it is pre-designed, built, sold and supported by Commvault, customers save time in hardware acquisition, installation and integration, daily management and patching and updating.

Commvault HyperScale Software allows organizations to choose hardware configuration sizes and models from technology companies like Fujitsu, Cisco, Lenovo, HPE, Super Micro Computer, Huawei and Dell EMC. Enterprises match hardware configurations and capacity to their secondary storage needs, while accelerating return on investment, reducing complexity and adding greater customer value.

“With Commvault HyperScale Software and reference designs, partners are able to address the data protection as well as secondary storage across all industries,” Nimergood said. “Our partnerships with leading technology companies allow partners to offer and implement solutions on any one of seven hardware platforms. Within secondary storage, two new use cases are big data and digital repositories. These environments require PBs of data, greater scalability, resiliency and ability to meet demanding service levels.”

Defense, financial services and health care are industries that develop and use many proprietary/secure applications and need high security for their data, he said. All of these industries have high security and regulated data protection requirements, and midsize companies have limited IT staff who need lower cost, secure data protection in their many remote offices and locations, he said.

“The value for partners is that both [the new software and appliance are] extremely easy to buy, easy to deploy and easy to manage and provide unprecedented resiliency,” Nimergood said. “This frees up the partner to expand their consultative sales and professional solutions to higher value services beyond the simple deployment of the hardware and software.”
