Cambium Networks, which offers access network solutions for verticals like education, hospitality, oil and gas, has acquired Xirrus Wi-Fi products and cloud services from Riverbed Technology.

Cambium said the Xirrus portfolio of enterprise Wi-Fi access points and subscription services, including the XMS Cloud Management platform, EasyPass Access, Application Control, Xirrus Positioning System (XPS) and MSP Command Center, will enhance and accelerate its existing network service application (NSA) capabilities and brings a “rich set of new services and customer experience to our customers.”

Financial details regarding the acquisition weren’t disclosed. Cambium works with about 10,000 customers and 5,900 channel partners.

Scott Imhoff, Cambium‘s senior vice president of product management, tells Channel Partners that Riverbed partners that support Xirrus and join Cambium’s ConnectedPartner program will have access to Cambium’s broader range of point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless networking solutions, as well as the cnPilot Wi-Fi and cnMatrix switching portfolios.

“We are confident that those partners have an opportunity to grow their business with that portfolio,” he said. “On the other hand, the existing [Cambium partners] will have access to Xirrus’ portfolio of Wi-Fi access points and cloud managed services that are highly complementary to the existing cnPilot and cnMaestro solution suite; and again, we expect those partners to benefit from the broader portfolio.”

Xirrus’ expertise in developing solutions for large public venues, often associated with large hotels and convention centers, will pair well with Cambium’s e430 wall plate solutions for in-room Wi-Fi experiences, Imhoff said. In addition, the ability of Xirrus partners to leverage Cambium’s expertise and solution portfolio for outdoor networking will allow them to extend customer networks from indoor to outdoor, and connect remote facilities, he said.

Cambium Networks wireless fabric provides agility and flexibility to optimally address customers’ wireless networking environments, and the addition of the Xirrus portfolio only enhances the fabric,” he said.

Xirrus has demonstrated “significant success” in education, both K-12 and higher education, large public venues, distributed retail and hospitality, “which is highly complementary and will directly support deeper penetration in those verticals among others,” Imhoff said.

“The acquisition of Xirrus aligns with, fortifies and accelerates our engagement in the [small and medium enterprise], inclusive of education [or] market,” he said. “The solution portfolio and vertical market focus [will] be highly complementary to our existing efforts. Cambium Networks is fully committed to the channel with virtually the entirety of our sales occurring through channel.  And while we expect the Xirrus partners to be pleased with the [partner] program, we also expect them to bring suggestions and recommendations to enhance it further, and we will of course be diligent in listening and acting on those suggestions.”

“The Xirrus team is excited to be joining an organization dedicated and committed to wireless networking,” said Bruce Miller, Cambium’s new vice president of enterprise marketing, and formerly with Xirrus and Riverbed. “Xirrus’ extensive enterprise experience and advance development will substantially contribute to the delivery of differentiated solutions by Cambium Networks as enterprises and service providers globally transition from 802.11ac to 802.11ax, otherwise known as Wi-Fi 6.”
