Will Security Become the Primary Driver for BDR?
As the data backup and disaster recovery (BDR) market continues to grow in 2014, managed services providers (MSPs) may want to focus on security to win new customers.
CCNS Consulting owner Karl Bickmore told MSPmentor in an interview today that the security of data will become “a primary concern and motivator in the BDR market.”
“As more and more organizations analyze the risk of privacy or security violations, they will be working to ensure their backup solution is protected,” he said.
Bickmore said his company has been “emphasizing the backup encryption while the data is at rest on the BDR, while in transit to the secure and compliant datacenter as well, and while at rest in the datacenter.”
Additionally, he noted that in order to stay compliant in many situations, data centers need to be located in the country of origin.
“This mostly means U.S. for our customers, but for our friends up north in Canada, this means the data must stay in a datacenter in Canada,” Bickmore said.
According to Bickmore, focusing on compliance needs, as well as backup encrpytion, is “a way to be competitive in the ever changing backup market.”
“One word of caution would be to make sure you know the security and privacy profile for your BDR provider,” he said. “They are not all the same and they do not all have good security compliance options.”
