Do MSPs Understand the Value of Hardware-based Backup?
Pushing tape for data backup and disaster recovery (BDR) is a losing cause for managed services providers (MSPs) trying to find a cheaper way to back up customer data.
“Tape is considered to be low cost because clients assume that because they have a tape backup drive, their systems are being backed up,” he said.
He added that the following points arent taken into consideration:
- Replacing tapes annually.
- Testing tape backups.
- Time spent recovering data.
- Lost productivity waiting for system recovery.
“We made the decision to move to a hardware-based backup and disaster recovery solution because too many times we came across companies with tape backups asking us to recover their systems and not being able to do so at all or in a timely manner,” he said.
This may seem like common knowledge to you, but, according to Robbins, it’s not. “I’ll say there are still IT professionals that don’t know about hardware-based backup systems or don’t know how to position them for some businesses.”
