Tellabs Shows New PON and ROADM Capabilities

Tellabs Inc. introduced two new optical products that expand bandwidth and provide more options for IP networks.

The company introduced two new Tellabs 1600 Series Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) that can be employed to consolidate network infrastructure, eliminate copper loops and improve service management via passive optical network (PON) technology. The products are aimed at the small-business market to provide all services over a single fiber-optic connection, supporting voice, video, high-speed Internet and T-1 service.

The Tellabs 1600-631 ONT is optimal for small businesses, with support for eight telephone lines, an Ethernet connection, two T-1s and a cable TV interface. The Tellabs 1600-641 ONT benefits multitenant locations, such as office parks, with support for 16 telephone lines, eight Ethernet connections, four T-1s and a cable TV interface. The new Tellabs ONTs will be generally available in the second quarter of 2006.

Tellabs also showed new multidegree ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer) capabilities for the Tellabs 7100 optical transport system.

The new ROADM capabilities provide a small, flexible bandwidth-management system, with dynamic optical bandwidth allocation and up to eight-degree ROADMs. Service providers can expand network capacity one optical link (up to 440gbps) at a time. In addition, the Tellabs 7100 system combines DWDM, SONET and Ethernet switching in a single platform.

The Tellabs 7100 system provides simplified wavelength provisioning for transport of high-bandwidth services and 44 channels of bandwidth to transport voice, data and video.
