Sony Ericsson Decamps from N.C., Will Cut 2,000 Jobs
A month after reporting earnings losses – for the fifth consecutive quarter – of $245 million, cell phone maker Sony Ericsson said it’s moving its North American headquarters and closing six sites worldwide.
Sony Ericsson expects the consolidation to sever about 2,000 jobs.
The company will move from North Carolina to Atlanta, executives said on Wednesday, and close additional sites in Miami, Seattle and San Diego in the United States; Kista, Sweden; and Chennai, India, a spokeswoman told The Associated Press.
The news really should come as no surprise. Sony Ericsson has said since April it planned to slash its global staff numbers – which total 10,000 – by 20 percent. So far, about 400 jobs have been cut and 1,600 more are expected by mid-2010, the spokeswoman told The AP.
It’s unknown how many of the 425 employees in Sony Ericsson’s North Carolina headquarters will be transferred to Georgia.
