Motorola Snaps Up BitBand for Undisclosed Amount
Motorola Inc. (MOT) has decided to buy Israel-based BitBand.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, which isn’t such a rarity when the acquiree is privately held. What does seem strange, though, is that Motorola will integrate BitBand into the home and networks mobility business, the very division the tech giant reportedly is trying to sell.
BitBand specializes in IPTV deployments as well as content delivery networks and over-the-top video services. Motorola said buying BitBand complements its content management and streaming servers product line.
“Motorola is committed to investing in our video infrastructure solutions as our customers evolve their networks to handle the explosion in consumer demand for video,” said John Burke, a senior vice president and general manager in Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility unit. “BitBand has a leading share in IPTV video on demand and a strong base in Europe that we plan to leverage as we continue growing our infrastructure business in the EMEA region.”
Motorola expects the BitBand acquisition to close some time this quarter.
Motorola’s shares closed down .91 percent on Monday to end at $8.70.
