IntelePeer Launches Developer Program

By Richard Martin

Following the lead of several telecom service providers, IntelePeer said it has launched a developer platform designed to make it easy for third-party developers to create rich telephony applications for service providers, businesses, and enterprises.

Running on the IntelePeer AppworX Open Communications Platform, applications will be hosted in the Internet cloud. A new Web site provides access to a developer forum, SDK tools, application programming interface (API) documentation, example applications, and a PHP code library, as well as direct access to IntelePeer’s global peering network.

Several large carriers and application platform providers have moved recently to open up their technology to outside developers. Earlier this week BroadSoft said it will expand its apps strategy to include a “Consumer Experience” platform that will allow its service provider customers to supply subscribers with a single online account to manage multiple IP-based services, including those from other providers. Subscribers will be able to manage their mobile devices, control DVR programming on their home TV, and integrate virtually any connected device on the BroadWorks interface.

Skype recently shut down its “Skype Extra” program for outside developers, but last week at the VON Conference & Expo, chief strategy officer Christopher Dean said it will be replaced by a “next-generation platform strategy that’s properly supported and gives developers a broader set of capabilities.”

Announced last year with a group of major partners including Cisco and Microsoft, IntelePeer’s AppWorx suite includes the company’s “SuperRegistry,” which gives providers back-end capabilities including carrier ENUM for managing IP-based phone numbers. While it says several service providers have adopted AppWorx, IntelePeer has not identified specific companies.
