Going the Distance

Strong winds and slightly chilly temperatures did not detract from a morning of sunshine and golf for the teams competing in Sunday’s CompTel/ASCENT Alliance tournament at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullterton, Calif., which was designed by Cal Olson and PGA legend Payne Stewart. It caters to all levels of play and features winding brooks, working oil rigs and varying elevations.

Vero Systems Inc. sponsored the CompTel/ASCENT Alliance kickoff event, including all prizes and giveaways. Among these was a $10,000 purse for the person who could get a hole in one. No one was able to capture that much-coveted award, but there were team and individual winners for other categories.

After a neck-and-neck contest, first place team honors went to the foursome of Ed Caputo and Bruce Paton of MCI; Gene Orr of NCR; and Phil Voelker of Telelogue. Each received Callaway putters and golf balls. Coming in a close second was the team including ITC^DeltaCom’s Drew Walker; Vero Systems’ Brian Cafferty; PPL Telecom’s David Kelley; and Sprint’s Will Smeigh. Each team member received a $75 gift certificate to the pro shop. Third place winners were Charlie Vogt, Taqua Inc.; Jim Odom, Martin Group Inc.; H. Russell Frisby Jr., CEO of the CompTel/ASCENT Alliance; and Lonnie Martin, White Rock Networks. Each received a collector’s divet tool and golf balls.

Andrea Alexander with Callipso won the women’s closest to the pin competition, while David Fellowes, vice president of KMC Telecom, won in the men’s category. Each received golf balls for their efforts. Vic Northrup with Cisco took the prize for the men’s longest drive and Pam Hill, with Virtual Back Office Systems, shot the women’s longest drive. Each received a putter.
