FTTP Provider Taps New Global Telecom for VoIP

By Khali Henderson

Triple-play provider MSTAR has tapped wholesale VoIP provider New Global Telecom (NGT) to supply wholesale hosted and trunk-based VoIP solutions for residential and business customers in Utah.

MSTAR is one of a handful to companies contracted to provide voice, Internet and IPTV services over UTOPIA, a fiber-optic network operated by 14 Utah cities. It also is one of two companies delivering a triple-play bundle over iProvo, the municipal fiber network operated by the City of Provo.

The company will use NGTs Wholesale VoIP telephony solutions to support the expansion of these ultra high-speed triple-play services into homes and small and medium-sized businesses. As part of the project MSTAR and NGT already successfully migrated 5,000 residential customers to the NGT platform.

The move to NGT will enable MSTARs foray into the SMB space. Previously it only provided Internet services to commercial accounts.

MSTAR CTO Tim Brown said his companys previous vendor, which it used for the past 18 months, did not have a business VoIP offer, explaining one of MSTARs reasons for switching. In addition, he said, NGT has built its platform on industry standards and defined businesses processes that his company requires to scale. Brown said MSTAR plans to replicate its model in other cities, but declined to discuss potential locations or timetables.

MSTAR is using NGTs 6DegreesIP wholesale product, including the Class 4 and Class 5 switching functionality, voice termination and voice applications. NGT also offers ongoing maintenance, and tier two and three support. MSTAR handles sales, installation, customer care, billing and collections.
