Droid Sales Sluggish to Start Report

Sales of the much-hyped and much-commercialized Motorola Droid on the Verizon network weren’t all they were cracked up to be … or were they?

It depends on how optimistic you were about sales. Many sources are calling sales of the new smartphone with Google Android technology “sleepy” and “slow.” There were plenty of phones left for sale in New York on Friday with none of those famous iPhone-like lines weaving around corners outside retail outlets.

However, while not releasing any numbers, Verizon says it sold a large number of Droids on Saturday and Sunday. The apparent failure to reach a sales milestone isn’t causing analysts to throw up their arms. Jim Suva of Citi wasn’t enthusiastic in his research note Monday, but said he believed Droid sales to be solid. He also said expectations for this phone weren’t really that high. Suva says it’ll take a series of new phones from Motorola to help the handset-maker get out of its three-year funk. Verizon, on the other hand, might be looking for a home run rather than a series of singles.

Meantime, another glowing review came in today – this one from a blogger at PC World, who says the Droid is his favorite cell phone ever.
