Siemens Demonstrates 3.2-Terabit Transmission

Using a combination of dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) and its own data
multiplexing technology, The Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group, Boca
Raton, Fla., has demonstrated transmission of 3.2 terabits per second (tbps) over fiber.
The lab demonstration, which Siemens calls a "world record," used 80 DWDM
channels each carrying 40 gigabits per second (gbps).

The 40gbps data streams were created using Siemens’ Electronic Time Division
Multiplexing (ETDM) technology. The fiber link was 40 kilometers long. The amount of data
delivered in the transmission was roughly equivalent to 100 million typed pages per
second.

The demonstration was done by the company’s Transport System Laboratories in Munich,
Germany, and will be repeated at Telecom ’99 in Geneva.
