NorthPoint Launches Broadband Service
Wholesale data CLEC NorthPoint Communications Group
Inc.(www.northpoint.net) has rolled out its national Internet backbone, which connects its local
DSL-based broadband networks across the country. The backbone enables the carrier’s carrier to offer its partners an end-to-end broadband solution.
The first commercial offering on the network is “Regional Connect,” which allows NorthPoint’s service provider partners to interconnect in one location and serve customers anywhere in NorthPoint’s network by backhauling their data traffic over NorthPoint’s backbone.
More than 25 service providers, including Planet System Network of America Inc.
(www.psn.net) and Verio Inc. (www.verio.com), use the service, NorthPoint says.
The backbone, completed through partnerships with Genuity Inc.
(www.genuity.com) and Global Crossing Ltd.
(www.globsalcrossing.com), consists of an ATM backbone, which connects the company’s existing local DSL networks. More than 75 percent of the company’s local markets currently are interconnected. The remaining markets were scheduled for connection by third quarter.
