BTI Photonic Systems Announces WDM Platform for the Metro Edge

By Khali Henderson

BTI Photonic Systems Inc. announced today the availability of its Netstender 2060 platform, which is designed to allow carriers to cost-effectively expand capacity required to accommodate growth in metro edge and regional markets.

The Netstender family extends the reach of optical ports on routers, SONET/SDH, Ethernet switches and can expand exhausted fiber capacity with scale-up capability from two channels to 32 with CWDM/DWDM. The new Netstender 2060 allows carriers to grow from six to 24 service slots seamlessly, the company said.

Currently deployed installations of BTIs Netstender 2060 are fully upgradeable while in-service to the new expandable architecture with full investment protection. BTI will be demonstrating its next generation architecture this week at TelecomNEXT.

Our customers are looking for a thin WDM solution up front that offers economical optical connectivity at the edge in a small form factor, and that is simple to deploy and manage right out of the box, said Lance Laking, president and CEO of BTI Photonic Systems. Unlike metro core builds, customers rely on an incremental capacity strategy at the edge.

Network operators, Laking explained, require an architecture that enables new service delivery on a thin WDM model with an option to scale network capacity where and when its required based on user adoption.

It is common sense economics were succeeding at our job when we can maximize our customers ROI as they roll out broadband services, he said.

As part of its next generation Netstender WDM platform, BTI is introducing a range of new optical service modules including high-gain EDFA amplifiers, Fiber Bragg Grating Dispersion Compensation modules, wavelength conversion service packs with optical protection switching, and DWDM multiplexers with automated power management.
