BroadSoft Inc., which has seen business trunking become the fastest-growing part of its business, has added new disaster recovery-related features, an FMC component, a bursty traffic option and improved activation functionality to its business trunking application.

Trunking in this case refers to the connectivity from the service provider to the end user.

The disaster recovery/business continuity enhancement enables businesses and organizations to reroute calls to maintain telephone service to any location or device in the event of a natural disaster, equipment or network failure, or other dire circumstance.

A feature called two-stage dialing, meanwhile, allows business trunking to tie in with mobile networks to enable end users to make BroadWorks calls from non-hosted devices and mobile clients.

The bursty option means businesses with seasonable communications capacity requirements can increase their trunk channels on an as needed basis. For example, a flower shop may need extra trunk channels around Mothers Day.

And software lets service providers to test and activate new features more quickly.

In other news from the vendor, the company announced KPN will use its BroadWorks VoIP platform to offer hosted communications services to small and medium businesses.
