BellSouth Corp. has unveiled its Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service with an optional single-bay node configuration, providing customers with more flexibility in wavelength ring configurations with optical transport options in the bandwidth ranges of 1, 1.25, 2.5 and 10 gigabits. This enhancement in BellSouths suite of wavelength services provides BellSouth customers with a great deal of flexibility in optical transport.

Designed for the transport of optical services between customer designated locations, BellSouths Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service is a DWDM optical network with ring diversity in which the entire capacity is dedicated to a single customer. The service provides diversity serving the customer premise location and interoffice network. It also offers customers service assurance guarantees for failures lasting longer than one second as well as a guarantee on each individual wavelength.

BellSouth Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service with a Single-Bay option provides the same efficient optical transmission of voice, Internet telephony, Ethernet, SONET, video and data solutions between customer locations in an even smaller footprint, said Jack Hullings, senior director, BellSouth Business Markets.

BellSouth last year introduced Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service for the purchase of multiple dedicated wavelengths. The previous Wavelength Dedicated Ring service was available in a dual-bay architecture providing up to 32 protected wavelengths or 64 unprotected wavelengths. The new single-bay configuration delivers 16 protected wavelengths or 32 unprotected wavelengths in half the footprint. It also results in cost savings to the customers as well as other potential efficiencies such as using 50 percent less floor space and reduced power requirements.

Depending on whether you are transporting IP, Ethernet, voice, video, data traffic or any combination of these, our Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service in a Single-Bay or Dual-Bay Service can meet our customers needs, added Hullings.

Working from a minimum configuration of three nodes up to more complex configurations with numerous customer nodes and central-office nodes, Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service can grow as customers networks grow. Customers can start with a single wavelength and expand to as many as 32 wavelengths in the new single-bay arrangement. Since BellSouth Wavelength Dedicated Ring Service is based on an active DWDM optical network with ring architecture, it also provides greater protection against service interruptions.
