Ameritech Chairman, CEO Announces Retirement

After 31 years at Ameritech Corp., Hoffman Estates, Ill., Richard C. Notebaert,
chairman and CEO of the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC), has announced he will
retire effective Dec. 30.

The retirement announcement comes after SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, another
ILEC, completed its $73 billion acquisition of Ameritech. Ameritech officials will not
comment on a replacement at this time, and say that any future announcements will be made
by SBC.

The 52-year-old Notebaert began his career in 1969 at a different Midwestern local
phone company–Wisconsin Telephone Co. (now part of Ameritech), where he held various
operations and marketing positions before moving to Ameritech Communications Inc. in 1983
as vice president of marketing and operations.

At Ameritech, he was promoted to president of Ameritech Mobile Communications Inc. in
1986, president of Indiana Bell in 1989 and president of Ameritech Services Inc. in 1992.
In January 1993, he moved to an executive position at Ameritech as vice chairman, later
becoming president and chief operating officer in January 1994. He was appointed to his
post as CEO of Ameritech in January 1994, and was elected to the chairman’s position in
April that same year.
