Upscale Hotels Embrace Managed TelePresence Services

HaloTelePresence, that next-generation video conferencing technology, has yet to gain critical mass. But The VAR Guy, our resident blogger over at, has been telling readers to expect TelePresence and the managed services market to converge on the hotel vertical.

He was right. A case in point: Marriott International says it's deploying Hewlett-Packard's managed TelePresence services and systems in its upscale hotels. Here's the scoop.

Marriott plans to leverage HP's Halo Meeting Room technology within existing conference rooms. In a prepared release, Marriott said its customers will benefit from Halo’s fully managed service, which includes 24x7 Halo Concierge support, and access to the Halo Video Exchange Network.

Initially, The VAR Guy expected these hotel-oriented TelePresence systems to serve large enterprises that were hosting private strategic meetings. But HP and Marriott are broadening the effort, and plan to specifically promote managed TelePresence services to small and midsize business that can't afford a full-blown solution in their own offices. The idea is to position the Halo Meeting Rooms as fee-based time shares for customers.
