VMworld: Avaya Collaborative Pods – A VCE Alternative?
Avaya at VMWorld 2012 unveiled Collaboration Pods, which converge virtualized storage, compute and network infrastructure. The solutions leverage Avaya, EMC and VMware technologies. Avaya says Collaborative Pods will speed datacenter and cloud deployments. In some ways, the Collaborative Pod effort sounds similar to VCE — the virtual compute environment company backed by Cisco, EMC and VMware.
Leveraging Collaborative Pods, Avaya believes service providers can more quickly roll out Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Communications as a Service (CaaS). Packages will include the Avaya Virtual Services Platform (VSP) 7000, an energy- and space-efficient Ethernet switching platform built to support fabric-based virtualized services.
Avaya says the Pod solutions will include storage arrays from EMC, VMware vCenter and VMware View, and networking, management, communications applications and integration from Avaya.
The Avaya Collaborative Pod announcement comes roughly a month after Avaya made mobile device management (MDM) moves.
