Symantec: Two Managed Services, One Company?
Forgive The VAR Guy for being briefly confused. Symantec announced Managed Backup Services earlier this week. But the announcement made zero mention of Symantec Protection Network (SPN), a software as a service (SaaS) platform that offers managed backup and storage. So, what’s the difference between SPN and Managed Backup Services? The VAR Guy found the answer.
The VAR Guy reached out to Richard Goodwin, a senior product marketing manager at Symantec. Goodwin has been involved in SPN’s development, so our resident blogger figured he’d have some answers. Indeed, Goodwin did. Here’s the brief email exchange…
The VAR Guy: Do Managed Backup Services and SPN serve different target markets and customers?
Goodwin: Definitely. Managed Backup Services are targeted at our enterprise Netbackup customers who would like onsite management of their on-premise backup solutions. Contrast this to the SPN or Online Backup services that focus on enabling cloud backup using Symantec off site resources and datacenters.
The VAR Guy: Is Managed Backup Services sold directly, and SPN offered through the channel?
Goodwin: Managed Backup Services is sold directly to the enterprise market. It is also sold to system integrators who are outsourcing their customers’ data protection operations. SPN is available direct and through channel partners. Hope this clears things up!
Goodwin certainly cleared things up for The VAR Guy. (Thank you, Richard — and thanks to Symantec PR, which replied with clarification as well.) But our resident blogger doesn’t understand why Symantec’s original Managed Backup Services announcement failed to mention how the service was positioned vs. SPN.
