Post-PC Era... Or Every Device Era?

Most pundits say we’ve entered the post-PC era. The VAR Guy respectfully begs to differ. Instead of calling this the post-PC era, a far wiser term is the Every Device Era. Here’s why.

For starters, PC sales are still growing. Yes, growing. Gartner scientists, using metrics and methods that are beyond The VAR Guy’s comprehensive, predict PC sales will grow 4.4 percent in 2012 and 10 percent in 2013. The research firm says PC shipments will top 400 million units in 2013, up from about 370 million units in 2012.

Impressive. So how can we be in the Post-PC Era when PC sales — backed by Windows 8, Ultrabooks and other new innovations — are poised for double-digit sales growth?

Answer: We’re not in the post-PC era. Instead, let’s call it the Every Device Era. It’s a time when CIOs, VARs and even the kid down the road needs to know and support Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, Apple iOS…

Hmmm, did The VAR Guy miss anything?

We’ve got smart phones, tablets, netbooks (well, maybe not netbooks…. heh), ultrabooks, notebooks, desktops and servers. We’ve got appliances. We’ve got consumer devices running business applications. We’ve got business devices running consumer applications.

The list goes on and on and on. But don’t let anyone tell you the PC dead. Instead, listen far more closely to customers who are demanding a great user experience across every device.

Indeed, welcome to the Every Device Era.
