Physical Security: Kensington Releases Dev Kit, Mini Security Lock

  • Written by Michael Cusanelli
  • January 6, 2015

Security lock designer Kensington recently released a new mini security slot development kit to allow device manufacturers to build locking slots into their thin and mobile devices. Kensington also debuted the matching MiniSaver Mobile Lock during CES 2015 this week, which will allow enterprise users to protect their BYOD devices from theft.

Security lock designer Kensington recently released a new mini security slot development kit to allow device manufacturers to build locking slots into their thin and mobile devices. The company also debuted the matching MiniSaver Mobile Lock during CES 2015 this week, which will allow enterprise users to protect their BYOD devices from theft.

With the mini security slot development kit, Kensington hopes to provide manufacturers with the specifications and strength criteria needed to develop a lock that fits on convertible laptops, tablets and smartphones used in enterprise settings within the space of a mini SD card or audio jack. The development kit is available now and includes slot and lock examples as well as mechanical drawings for designers.

“With our comprehensive OEM Developers Kit and new Security Slot specifications, we are making it easy for laptop and mobile device manufacturers to deliver the rock-solid security features customers want, regardless of the size of their device,” said Rob Humphrey, director of Global Business Development, Security Products at Kensington, in a statement.

The new MiniSaver Mobile Lock features a cleat-locking design and will be compatible with the legacy K-bar Kensington slot-enabled devices. The new lock is the smallest attach point in the industry that meets Kensington’s security standards, according to the company. The attached cable is made of carbon steel with a plastic sheathing to resist cuts and also rotates and pivots on a hinge to enable users to easily insert the key.

“Today’s increasingly mobile workforce is creating more demand than ever for ultra-thin devices and those devices need protection to prevent the mounting risk of theft and resulting data breaches,” said Judy Barker, global product manager at Kensington. “The first line of defense provided by physical security locks can stave off device theft and save businesses and their employees from the costly exposure of a data breach.”

The Kensington MiniSaver Mobile Lock is available now for $59.99.
