Microsoft Office 2013, SharePoint App Developer Contest
Can Microsoft Office 2013 and SharePoint attract innovative software developers and a new generation of apps? Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) sure hopes so. And to nudge things along, the company has launched an “Apps for Office and SharePoint Developer Contest.” Here are the details.
The contest sounds pretty straightforward and includes multiple prizes, including a $10,000 grand prize. Heck, that’s not going to make a developer rich… but it could prompt curious ISVs to give Office 2013 and SharePoint a closer look.

- Step 1. Build an app for Office and SharePoint. Learn how at dev.office.com.
- Step 2. Successfully submit the app to the Office Store at sellerdashboard.microsoft.com. Complete this step by Nov. 30, 2012.
- Step 3. Accept the contest rules and submit a contest entry form here by Dec. 20, 2012.
Pulled In Too Many Directions?
Again, it sure sounds simple. But Microsoft itself faces some complex challenges. Office doesn’t exactly sit at the center of the software universe anymore. Most start-up developers appear focused on Apple iOS and Google Android these days. Plus Microsoft is calling on developers to write Windows Phone 8 and tablet apps. All those different priorities could further strain the Microsoft software developer community.
Still, give Microsoft credit. Windows 8 will deliver a consistent code base across smart phones, tablets and PCs. Perhaps that means Office 2013 and SharePoint apps will be easier to write, as well, across all of those platforms…
