Digital Domain Chooses Avere for Network-Attached Storage

Avere Systems is taking its talents to Hollywood. That’s right, the network-attached storage (NAS) provider has sealed a deal with Digital Domain, a digital production company founded by film director James Cameron, through which Avere will provide Digital Domain with its FTX Series NAS appliances that will help the company “maximize IOPS and minimize latency of its cloud-based infrastructure,” according to an Avere press release.

Digital Domain will implement Avere’s NAS solution at its co-location data center in Las Vegas, Nev. So here’s how the deal with Avere changes the way Digital Domain operates. Up until now, the production company has data centers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver. Without Avere, Digital Domain would not have been able to reap the space and power benefits of its Las Vegas co-location data center.

But with Avere’s FTX Series NAS appliances in place, Digital Domain will now be able to render digital frames for films remotely. The alternative would have been to open new data centers in several different cities to minimize the distance between its data centers. Digital Domain Senior Engineer Mike Thompson estimates that Avere’s NAS appliances will reduce Digital Domain’s latency down to 0.1 millisecond. That, according to Thompson, is 250x faster than the production company performed before implementing Avere’s NAS solution.

Avere has designed its FXT Series NAS appliances with a tiered file system so that its business customers can use the solution to organize data across RAM, Flash, SaS and SATA tiers. According to Avere, its solution reduces a businesses’ use of disk, power and rack space by an average of 5:1. Digital Domain is the biggest customer win for Avere since the company partnered with Nexenta in October, 2011 to develop what both companies called “an enterprise-class open storage and data management solution.”
