CommVault Product and Solutions Marketing Senior Director Jeff Echols says businesses are being forced to reevaluate how they access business information because of the growing popularity of cloud file services.

CommVault (CVLT) has released new CommVault Edge capabilities to address bring-your-own-device (BYOD) challenges through search and restore features made available across employee-owned mobile, desktop and laptop devices.

The company has introduced a new Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Explorer plug-in for the solution to enable file synchronization between PCs and native file search, aiming to allow organizations to retain control over their data and information while providing employees with a way to securely share files among their devices.

The following are new capabilities included in the new CommVault Edge release:

  • Edge Sync aims to allow workers to get to their most recent files or different versions of their files, regardless of the computer they were created on, via automated synchronization that shares work across laptops and desktops and provides access from smartphones and tablets. Backup is only performed if a file has changed.

  • Edge Access provides data portability and self-service access to a secure, personal data cloud. A new Windows Explorer plug-in for Windows 7 and 8 environments extends Simpana software's search and recovery features to include mobile apps, web-based portal and integrated enterprise search. End users can retrieve and view all of their protected files and e-mail in the Simpana ContentStore, CommVault's virtual repository of all managed information.

  • Edge Protection protects business-critical data on laptops and desktops through source-side deduplication, opportunistic scheduling, bandwidth throttling, flexible policy definition, and the intelligence to run a backup only if a file has changed.

  • Interoperability with legacy backup provides customers with the ability to quickly implement a scalable protection solution for corporate client PCs and maximize existing technology investments.

CommVault Product and Solutions Marketing Senior Director Jeff Echols said in a prepared statement that cloud file services are forcing businesses to reevaluate how they access business information.

"Efficient modern data management technologies, such as CommVault Edge, can empower employees to securely share data across the organization for better collaboration and productivity, while meeting corporate compliance requirements – in effect, transforming IT into people-centric organizations that deliver more value to the business," he said.

CommVault Edge file synchronization and search capabilities are available immediately in the Simpana 10 software release.
