IBM, Fiberlink Acquisition Update for MSPs

IBM completed the acquisition of Fiberlink Communications this week, a story we reported on back in November. What should MSPs know?

IBM (IBM) completed the acquisition of Fiberlink Communications, a mobile device management (MDM) and security company. Financial terms of the deal, which MSPmentor covered in November, were not disclosed.

IBM unveiled the acquisition details in mid-November. Big Blue said Fiberlink’s mobility platform will become part of IBM’s software as a service (SaaS) portfolio, adding that the platform will be offered on the IBM SoftLayer cloud infrastructure.

IBM Cloud and Smart Infrastructure General Manager Deepak Advani said in a statement that IBM will continue to increase the number of cloud-based services to “help eliminate barriers to adoption and speed results.”

Advani also said that “no other company can match the high level of mobile management and security capabilities that IBM MobileFirst provides across a full range of users.”

With regards to how the acquisition will affect Fiberlink partners, IBM and Fiberlink provided their own answers:

As we mentioned last month, this move could be a possible indicator of what’s to come in the mobile device management (MDM) space. Will other MDM vendors become acquired in 2014? Will it be a growing trend? We’ll follow any upcoming news on the subject.
