AVG Buys Level Platforms: Will Symantec, McAfee Respond?

AVG’s buyout of Level Platforms, announced today, creates an awkward moment for Level Platforms, Symantec (SYMC) and McAfee (owned by Intel Corp.). Indeed, AVG competes in the anti-virus market. And both Symantec and McAfee are set to sponsor Level Platforms’ big MSP Community Summit next week in Las Vegas. Can all the anti-virus makers get along in the MSP industry?

As of June 12, Symantec was listed as a platinum sponsor for the conference. McAfee was in as silver sponsor. And email security companies like Exchange Defender and Spam Soap were also listed as silver sponsors.

Among the key questions:

  • Will security software and cloud companies still show up at the Level Platforms event, when parent AVG essentially competes with those companies on some fronts?

  • How will Level Platforms maintain integrations with third-party security companies amid AVG’s ownership?

  • What special programs and incentives might AVG launch to switch Level Platforms’ installed base to AVG’s security software?

MSPmentor is poking around on those and other fronts today. Stay tuned.
