It's a “vaccine” for data management cost, complexity and protection ills.

It’s no secret that health care organizations are drowning in the endless and ever-increasing tide of data these days, and fighting against the rising threats of data costs, system downtimes and loss of data integrity. This is due in part to the use of standardized electronic health records and medical imaging.

The fact that the health care industry reported over 229 data breaches affecting over 6 million people last year highlights of the extent of the problem. Cringe.

Thankfully, StorageCraft has come up with a vaccination. To help ward off these rising threats and effectively “immunize” health care organizations, StorageCraft has released a health care-focused solution. Dubbed StorageCraft for Healthcare, the tool is a converged scale-out primary and secondary data platform with integrated data protection.

StorageCraft recently introduced OneXafe solution — the industry’s first converged data platform for both primary and secondary data, and data protection — for the specific requirements and challenges of health care environments. Basically, it addresses the data challenges that IT systems and budgets face. Says Ross Hurd, CIO at Lake Chelan Community Hospital, “We now have an easy to manage and exceptionally well-protected data environment in a single solution, that meets our needs for remote replication, file serving data protection, continuous data protection and even protects us from possible exposure to ransomware.”

StorageCraft for Healthcare helps solve a number of things, some of which are considered the most pressing issues of health care-specific data management and protection, including:

  • Eliminating spiraling data costs: Health care organizations are facing extraordinary and unprecedented growth in storage capacity. StorageCraft for Healthcare steps in with comprehensive data management and protection services in a single solution with seamless integration to disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS). This allows health care organizations to scale out storage dynamically as their requirements shift.

    • Malicious threats are thwarted: StorageCraft for Healthcare delivers central visibility of all data, which means it can provide hearty encryption along the entire data life cycle without any unnecessary management complexity. The shining feature here is that the tool takes snapshots every 90 seconds. This allows health care organizations to immediately recover the most recent version of data, enabling them to thwart an attempted attack.

    • Insurance policy premiums are lowered: This can be expensive stuff. To protect against the financial risk that comes with privacy and data breaches, health care organizations often look to insurance policies. This can be extremely pricey, though, as it can add up to tens of millions of dollars in required coverage. When health care organizations can prove that they have effective data management and protection strategies in place, these premiums can be reduced.

    • Data degradation is contained: StorageCraft provides a platform that converges both primary and secondary data while also adding integrated data protection. This solution detects “silent” data degradation caused by bit rot. Legacy storage systems store images such as X-rays to a picture archiving and communication system and may not detect if data has been compromised. As a result, the information read from the legacy storage system may be corrupt and unusable. When lives are on the line, fast and unhindered access to data is vital.

Shridar Subramanian, vice president of product management and marketing at StorageCraft, says that if health care practitioners can’t get patient information when they need it, the quality of care could be …

…severely compromised. This means data management and protection is an absolute must.

“A scale-out converged primary and secondary data platform with integrated data protection is a game-changer for health care organizations,” says Subramanian. “This is especially true for medium-size health care practices and hospitals that face the same data challenges as large health care providers but have far fewer resources and smaller budgets at their disposal.”

Subramanian goes on to say that StorageCraft for Healthcare cost-effectively solves the budget, management and risk challenges of explosive data growth.

The opportunity for the channel in this regard and with this solution is significant.

“Small and midsized health care organizations often have the same data infrastructure challenges as large hospitals and medical practices, but don’t have the in-house resources or budget to solve them,” says Subramanian. “This represents a strong business opportunity for channel organizations to gain or expand their health care footprint by building and managing integrated use case-specific solutions based on StorageCraft converged data management and protection technologies.”
