ZERTOCON — Zerto on Tuesday announced IT Resilience, which converges backup, disaster recovery and cloud mobility solutions into a single platform. The vendor also unveiled Zerto 7, a glimpse into the vendor’s road map and its vision for backup — an offer that will be available early next year.

The announcements were made at ZertoCon 2018, being held this week in Boston.

Based on its continuous data-protection philosophy, which sits under the hood of the IT Resilience platform, Zerto’s new scalable platform targets the continuous business of the cloud.

“In this new platform, we’re bringing together continuous data-protection engine, which that takes care of replication; the journal, which is a different way of doing data protection; our application consistency groupings; and backup, to make it simpler and to simplify workflows for our customer,” Rob Strechay, senior vice president of product at Zerto, told conference attendees. “But really, this continuous data protection is like having an engine in a car. If you don’t have a steering wheel for that or an orchestration automation layer that’s tightly coupled to that engine, it’s hard to get to where you want to go.”

Companies certainly need that steering wheel. In 2017, unplanned outages, such as natural disasters, cost organizations $306 billion, while more sinister threats such as ransomware cost them $11.5 billion, Ziv Kedem, CEO and co-founder of Zerto, shared with conference attendees. He also noted that only slightly more than 7 percent of businesses feel like they have a truly resilient infrastructure, according to figures from a joint IDC and Zerto study – The State of IT Resilience – that will be available soon.

The Zerto IT Resilience platform, with Zerto’s continuous data protection technology at its core, is designed to solve many of digital transformation challenges – such as increased complexity coupled with an increased need for data security and protection – by converging backup, disaster recovery and cloud mobility solutions into one single, simple and scalable platform. Orchestration and automation are built in, giving organizations the ability to modernize and innovate. Analytics and control provide visibility across multisite, multicloud environments to ensure business SLAs are met, according to Zerto.

“The IT Resilience platform will fundamentally change the way companies embrace change, protect data and applications and meet the ‘always-on’ demands of the digital customer,” said Kedem. “Instead of forcing IT teams to deal with cumbersome legacy point solutions, Zerto is combining its experience in providing continuous data protection and cloud mobility with enhanced backup capabilities in one platform.”

As Zerto partners – traditional resellers, solution providers, and cloud service providers (CSPs) – get ready for the IT Resilience platform, scheduled to ship in August, Zerto also gave them a vision for what to expect early next year.

“The market is ready to change,” he said. “Backup technology doesn’t meet today’s customer expectations; 24/7, granular at scale has changed backup, and ransomware has changed backup,” said Strechay. “Periodic backups are a thing of the past — you can’t …

… achieve seconds of RPO [recovery point objectives] at scale.”

Zerto contends that the future of backup is continuous protection with a new “Elastic Journal” that delivers RPOs of seconds at scale for short and long-term data retention, eliminating the need for legacy, periodic-based backups.

That’s a key piece of Zerto’s vision for the future of backup, in addition to: best-of-breed, continuous data-protection technology, which is at the core of delivering IT resilience; and new data-protection workflows to automate recovery from any point in time across on-premises and cloud repositories.

Zerto 7 will add new capabilities to its IT Resilience platform to change the way that backup is done. Some key features to expect:

  • The Elastic Journal, which merges granular journal technology with long-term repositories allowing for a continuous stream of recovery points with search and recovery across data, files or virtual machines (VMs) from any point in time from 7 seconds to 7 years.

  • Intelligent indexing and search across on-premises or cloud to enable recovery for short and long-term retention.

  • Data Protection workflows to automate the recovery from any point in time ensuring application consistency across repositories for short and long-term data retention.

Zerto 7 will also introduce incremental, synthetic and full copies to increase efficiency and reduce storage needs, enhancements to its scale-out architecture and new on-premises and cloud repository targets.

The vendor also talked about additional capabilities to come: prescriptive analytics to analyze past performance to determine optimized business outcomes and answer “what if” questions; and GUI and simplified workloads to enhance and simplify the user experience.

Looking even farther down the road, Zerto has in its sights physical apps, containers and cloud-borne applications.
